IB MYP Design Teacher (National/Expatriate)

As the IB MYP Design Teacher, you are responsible for developing and delivering a rigorous, inquiry-driven, and concept-based Design curriculum aligned with the IB MYP framework. The role emphasizes design thinking, innovation, and problem-solving, encouraging students to investigate authentic challenges, create solutions, and evaluate outcomes through an iterative design cycle.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Develop, plan, and implement engaging MYP Design units aligned with IB standards and the school’s mission and vision.
  2. Foster creativity, critical thinking, and inquiry through hands-on design projects using both digital and product-based technologies.
  3. Design learning experiences that promote the development of IB ATL (Approaches to Learning) skills and align with MYP criteria A–D (Inquiring & Analyzing, Developing Ideas, Creating Solutions, Evaluating).
  4. Integrate design principles across disciplines and collaborate with other subject teachers to promote interdisciplinary learning.
  5. Maintain a safe and organized design studio or makerspace environment that encourages experimentation and innovation.
  6. Differentiate instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles, language levels, and individual needs.
  7. Develop formative and summative assessments consistent with MYP assessment criteria, providing timely and constructive feedback.
  8. Support students in documenting and reflecting on their learning through digital design portfolios.
  9. Incorporate sustainability, ethics, and global awareness into design projects.
  10. Participate actively in professional learning communities (PLCs), curriculum review processes, and collaborative planning sessions.
  11. Perform any additional duties assigned by the Principal or designated supervisor.

Background Experiences

  • Minimum 5 years of teaching experience, preferably in an IB MYP, international, or bilingual school.
  • Experience teaching design thinking, product design, digital design, or related subjects (e.g., STEM, robotics, or technology education).
  • Experience integrating sustainability, innovation, and real-world problem-solving in classroom practice.
  • Prior involvement in curriculum development, project exhibitions, or interdisciplinary learning projects.
  • Familiarity with managing technology tools such as CAD software, digital fabrication, coding platforms, or 3D modeling tools.

Professional & Educational Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Design, Design Technology, Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Recognized teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, B.Ed., or equivalent).
  • IB MYP training and demonstrated understanding of the IB philosophy highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in English for instruction; bilingual ability in Bahasa Indonesia and English is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with design-related safety standards, workshop practices, and digital tools.

Expertise & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of IB MYP Design framework and assessment criteria.
  • Skill in integrating digital tools and design technology platforms (e.g., Tinkercad, Adobe Suite, robotics kits).
  • Cultural Sensitivity & Community Engagement – Awareness of the unique social and emotional needs of children in mining industry settings.
  • Resilience & Adaptability – Ability to work in a remote school environment and support students facing transitional family dynamics.
  • Collaboration & Leadership – Experience working with cross-functional teams, parents, and stakeholders to enhance student learning.
  • Use of Digital Learning Tools – Familiarity with LMS platforms, technology-enhanced learning, laboratory work, and data-driven assessment strategies.
  • Strong understanding of IB Approaches to Teaching and Learning (ATL).
  • Effective classroom management and student engagement strategies.
